When final box office receipts were tallied at 11:59 pm Saturday night, Furious 7 completely dominated the competition with a debut in 63 international markets. Variety reports the latest entry in the Fast & Furious franchise brought in $384 million, which made it the fourth highest-grossing global opening in history. Only Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows ($483.2 million), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($394.4 million) and The Avengers ($392.5 million) have globally performed better than Furious 7 at the box office.
Cast member Vin Diesel marked the occasion with an Instagram post, saying, “Proud of all the hard work from the whole team. History.”
Production was halted during Furious 7 as the cast and crew emotionally and logistically dealt with the 2013 death of primary character Paul Walker. The highly profitable series could theoretically end on a high note as a send off to Walker, but such a box office boon may mean yet another sequel.
“I think there may be another one,” Johnson said. “I think there are a few more miles left on this franchise. They are talking about it now and we can have early discussions about it now, which I’m cool with.”
