“I rule you, before, you used to rap like the Fu-Schnickens/Nas designed your Blueprint, who you kidding?” – Nas “Stillmatic Freestyle” (Jay-Z Diss)
Although these two hip-hop greats have long-since squashed their infamous beef, Nas took a shot at Hov for his old flow, which was much more Twista-like, than present-day Shawn Carter. While it’s not to say that Jay’s old flow was anything to laugh at, it’s a far cry from the Marcy product we’ve all grown to know and love. The low fade and business suit were once an outfit that the gold toothed, high-top faded, big chain wearing MC probably would’ve frowned upon, let along imagine himself wearing one day.
The now 45-year-old mogul has risen to one of hip-hop’s elite artists, but it wasn’t an easy road by any means. The Brooklyn spitter dropped his debut album in 1996 at the ripe age of 26. And thanks to the good folks at Pigeons and Planes, we get to hear what your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper sounded like before that classic hit the shelves.
