Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook has been an absolute stat machine in his last four games. Last night, he posted four consecutive triple doubles, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since Michael Jordan pulled it off in 1989 playing for the Chicago Bulls.
Also with his 49 points (a career high), Westbrook tied Larry Bird with the highest point total with a triple double over the last 30 NBA seasons.
With his February averages of 31.2 points, 9.1 rebounds and 10.3 assists per game, Westbrook was only the second player in NBA history to average 30 points, 9 rebounds and 10 assists for a calendar month. With the reigning MVP, Kevin Durant, out with a foot injury, Westbrook is having to pull off superhuman like performances nightly to pace the Thunder while they try to hold on to the eighth and final playoff spot in the super competitive Western Conference.
With Westbrook’s recent performances, he is gaining ground on assumed MVP frontrunners James Harden from the Houston Rockets and Stephen Curry from the Golden State Warriors. To also add to his “superhero”-like aura, Westbrook is now sporting a protective facemask thanks to an inadvertent knee from a teammate during the Portland game. Westbrook needed surgery to fix the fracture on his face and only missed one game (!) in the process.
Westbrook is already well known for his super athleticism, and now he is adding to his legend by guiding the Thunder due to his legendary performances he is putting up almost every night. After claiming the 2015 NBA All Star game MVP award by scoring 41 points (one shy of Wilt Chamberlain‘s All-Star game record), it looks like the “Russ for MVP” bandwagon is in full motion.
