The Jay Z and UGK collaboration “Big Pimpin’” is currently mired in eight years of litigation due to sample clearances. And while it ultimately spent 20 weeks on Billboard magazine’s “Hot 100” chart peaking at the number 18 spot, Bun B tells ThisIs50 the song almost never happened.
“Pimp was supposed to be on ‘A Week Ago’ with Jay Z and Too Short,’ Bun told Jack Thriller of ThisIs50.com. “They couldn’t figure out exactly where to record the song because the East Coast beef was going on. Jay Z was like, ‘I’m not leaving New York right now.’ And Pimp was like, ‘Well sh*t, I ain’t leavin’ the South. I guess we just won’t do it.’”
It was only after the opportunity to work together came back around in the form of “Big Pimpin’” that the collaboration happened. And Pimp C has gone on record about initially being hesitant to record the record. Nonetheless, as Bun B told Jack Thriller, if Pimp C found a way to get a verse on “A Week Ago,” there most likely wouldn’t have been a need for “Big Pimpin’.”
