Despite the lack of any solid evidence to support the claims, rumors of an affair between Rihanna and her Roc Nation boss Jay Z have been running rampant on the gossip mill for years..and now we all know why.
The fabricated affair between the pop superstar and the rap mogul has been cited as the source of everything from the rumored tension in the Carters’ marriage to the supposedly strained relationship between Rihanna and Beyonce, but now Rihanna’s former publicist is coming forward to set the record straight once and for all with a shocking confession.
Jonathan Hay, who now works as a music producer, says he never imagined that making up a story about a Rihanna and Jay Z affair during his time as her publicist would get as out of hand as it did. Speaking to the NY Daily News in a recent e-mail, he describes his decision to leak the fake story as one made out of “desperation.”
“The pr stunt that I did was out of desperation to help break ‘Pon de Replay.’It was reckless and I didn’t think it was going to work. I was just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what would stick.
I’m ashamed that I’m even talking about this. I just want to put this rumor to rest once and for all.”
Hay also revealed that he’s since apologized to both Rihanna and Jay Z and says it was the upcoming release of an alleged tell-all book about Beyonce’s life (which includes mention of the fabricated affair rumor) that prompted him to admit the truth.
“I didn’t think it would be this big story, But now, seeing Beyoncé on the cover of this book and knowing that people are profiting from speculations and opinions about her really turns my stomach.”
These days, Hay now works as an established music producer who has ironically entered into a recent agreement with Jay Z’s music streaming service Tidal. With news of the book release spreading like wildfire, he says he’s concerned that his revelation may jeopardize his opportunity.
“I was blindsided by the news of ‘Becoming Beyoncé’ coming out and it couldn’t come at a worse time for me. I’m currently releasing projects with my label Urban Hitchcock through Tidal, a company that is owned by Jay Z and Beyoncé … Hopefully this news hasn’t ruined that relationship for me.”
Given the damage that these rumors may have potentially done to the relationships between all parties involved, Hays is right to worry indeed.
