When asked about James’ 2014 move to Cleveland he said, “You can’t hold up the whole team because you and your mom and your posse want to spend an extra night in Cleveland.”
Maverick Carter, a long-time friend and business partner of LeBron, took offense to Jackson using the word “posse.”
He would later explain to ESPN: “It’s the word ‘posse’ and the characterization I take offense to. If he would have said LeBron and his agent, LeBron and his business partners or LeBron and his friends, that’s one thing. Yet because you’re young and black, he can use that word. We’re grown men.”
LeBron was asking about Jackson’s comments at a Cavs practice and said “I got nothing for him.”
Carmelo Anthony, who plays under Phil Jackson, also said its pretty easy to understand why the word posse is offensive.
“I think anybody would understand that. Anybody. I don’t think you have to be a rocket scientist or an educated person to understand what that means to us,” he said.
